Three routes exist — online, by phone and at an ATM — and only one of them is free and works before the card is activated. Here's what each costs and when to use it.

The short version
Sign in to the Netspend account and the balance sits on the dashboard. It's free, it's current, and it also shows pending transactions — which matters, because a balance that looks wrong is usually a pending charge not yet settled.
This is the only route that shows the transaction list rather than a single figure, so it's the one to use when you're checking why a number moved rather than just what it is.
The automated line reads the balance after the card number is entered. It's free and it works at any hour, which makes it the fallback when you're away from a browser.
Netspend support: 1-866-387-7362. Have the card number ready — the automated system asks for it before anything else.
The automated line only reads the figure. If the balance looks wrong, you need the online dashboard to see pending items, or an agent to raise a dispute.
Any ATM on the card's network will show the balance on request. It's the least convenient route and the only one that can cost money for the privilege of asking.
Decline the withdrawal and take the balance only — some networks charge for the enquiry regardless, so check the on-screen fee prompt before confirming.
| Route | Cost | Shows pending? |
|---|---|---|
| Online | $0 | Yes |
| Phone | $0 | No |
| ATM | Network-dependent | No |

A store-bought card carries no balance until activation completes, so there's nothing to check beforehand. The number on the front works for the activation flow and nothing else.
Once it's active, the balance starts at zero until you load the card. If activation stalls, the step-by-step walkthrough covers where it usually breaks.
No. There's no balance until the card is activated.
Online and phone are free. ATM enquiries can carry a network fee.
Check the pending transactions online first. Unsettled charges show there before they hit the balance. If it still doesn't add up, call and ask for a transaction breakdown.
Usually a hold. Fuel pumps and hotels authorise more than the final charge and release the difference later.
